Feeling like a slug!

Me and Girl2 on prom night

First, check out Girl2 in her prom dress. This picture was taken on her very last day of high school! She will graduate cum laude, with a cosmetology degree, an associates degree in science and math, and VERY close to completing Eagle Scout. I can’t manage to change my socks daily. This is why, as happy as I am for her and as proud, I feel like a slug.

I  had all of these great plans for 2023. I was going to do a fair every month. I was going to complete a large painting every week, a couple of small paintings, and sketch every day.

With the exception of a couple of small watercolors, I haven’t managed to complete a single painting. I have done a small handful of sketches, but nothing near the volume I wanted to do.

So what’s wrong me? Why can’t I manage to follow through? It’s so easy to get down on myself and think about how terrible I am. But doing nothing is the norm. That is the standard that the human body wants to maintain. Inertia. A body at rest will remain at rest until acted upon by a force, right?

So the real question is what happened before that motivated me to do something? How did I manage to get up and do anything before? We typically throw around words like “discipline” and “plan” without really understanding how those words become actions.

I don’t have an answer to that. I know that routine is the best way for me to get things accomplished. If I manage to sit at a drawing table with my pens and paper, I will draw something. So I have to set the routine to have my pens and paper out, maybe at a specific time or at least convenient place every day. Like the saying goes, “Chance favors the prepared mind.” If my space is prepared and my materials available, it’s a whole lot easier for me to actually sit down and get some work done. The current state of the studio is not conducive to that effort, to say the least

Garage studio is trashed

I did manage to take some supplies with me to the mall while the wife and kids explored the shops. I didn’t get a whole lot of sketches in, but something is a brazillian times more than nothing, right?

The Videos

S6E33

I’ve spent some time in Louisiana this week and sat on a cool patio in a soft rain while drinking ice cold beer and eating hot crawfish. PURE BLISS! Thought I’d paint about it in my journal a bit. The Sexy, Red-Headed Darcy named our crustacean Steve

The Longy: Can’t get enough of watching paint dry with us? Me neither. Here is the 90 minute LONGY.  https://youtu.be/NgnWN5_w2TQ

The Quiche: It’s pronounced “Quickie”. If you would like to see the process at high speed with me and the family singing a song along with it, then the 3 minute Quiche is for you. https://youtu.be/RyrbM_FewKo

The Easels: Each week my fabulously talented friends send in photos and videos of their works for me to share with you. Hopefully, it inspires EVERYONE to create something. This week we have Kelly Byrne, The Sexy, Red-Headed Darcy, Pamela French, Jamie Lynne and Jay the Viking.  Click Here to watch What’s On Your Easel! https://youtu.be/qukLE4y5oas

The Easels

Speaking of the easels, I up and left town with laptop in hand to edit this post and get it out for the website and the newsletter, but failed to bring any of the cool easel photos with me. They are all on the desktop that we usually broadcast from. I don’t want you to miss them, so expect a supplement newsletter in the very near future.

The Art

RR Crossing  A Bee

My fascination with the mundane continues with a railroad crossing.  I’m also still painting bugs.  I really dig painting like this.  It always amazes me how fast it happens once I decide to do it.  I’m also always a bit put out when it’s over because I have nothing to work on.  And then there’s the fear that the next one won’t be as good as the one I just finished.  Does that ever happen to you?

The Easels

Every week, I ask for submissions for The Artistic Biker Live! “What’s On Your Easel” feature.  In this case, your easel is wherever you create, whether its painting, drawing, practice, sculpting, any of the visual arts, or photographs of your culinary and performance arts.  The submissions will go here.  If you would like to submit something, send me a photo of it to blade@artisticbiker.com, or tweet it to me @bladetheartist.

Daddy/Daughter Breakfast

Daddy Daughter Breakfast 15OCT2012

Sometimes we time it just right that as soon as we just get into a sketch, the food shows up.  I both love and loathe when that happens.

It’s week 2 of The Halloweeny Season! You know how much we love the Halloween here at The Artistic Biker!!11!!1!!!  Anyway, this video was a tribute to the vampires of Twilight.  Because vampires shouldn’t twinkle.  And vampires suck.

This Week’s Stuff 14OCT2012

The Art

This week I made a commitment to myself that I would endeavor to have one painting in finishing, one in background, and two in prep each week.  Of course that means that I didn’t accomplish any of it.  Well, technically I did, but it was a rework of a painting I started two weeks ago.  I am REALLY digging this painting and drawing every day biz.  It’s even more fun when others join in with me.

The studio has TWO whole members now.  That’s a doubling of membership for every week it’s been open.  We’re developing a schedule of classes to encourage others to come out and play was well.  I’ll keep you posted on that as it develops.  In the meantime, if you’re in Oklahoma and out driving around some night, swing by and see what we’re all about.

The Links

Every week on The Artistic Biker Live! we turn the links on in the chat room for the last ten minutes of the show.  That way, if anyone has any creativity type links they want to share, they can.  Then I review them to ensure that the porn ones are kept safely away from prying eyes and bookmarked for “Figure Drawing” reference later, and present to you all the family friendly(ish) ones.  Here are this week’s links:

Candlelight Red Naked Ladies Big Rooster

I’m really into the bright colors and close up point of view right now.  I can never seem to turn a camera on while doing one of these.  It always turns out that I’m sitting there trying to decide what I’m going to paint, and then suddenly I’m painting.  Once I decide what I’m going to paint, these are usually done in just a few hours.  Wacky.

Daddy/Daughter Breakfast

Sadly, this week’s Daddy/Daughter Breakfast didn’t happen.  We stayed up until 1am, unheard of for a 7 year old.  Girl2 didn’t even roll out of bed on Saturday until 10 and then it was time to leave for her soccer game.  She has an early game next week too, so we probably won’t get to go then either.  That’s the ONLY thing I dislike about her playing soccer.

The Opening

http://youtu.be/YdTaIjTBu-Q

This week’s video is a slideshow presentation of just some of the work involved in getting the studio opened.  This was a lot of work and I can’t thank everyone enough for all of their encouragement along the way.  There is still a lot of work to do, but getting open is a HUGE achievement.  Thank you all so much!
