  • On The Rules of Art…

Last night’s EDM was to draw an egg carton.  This was another of those challenges that I may have to revisit with color.  This particular egg carton was made of the evil styrofoam and had a RAINBOW of colors bouncing off.  But, for this set of challenges I set parameters that require me to do as much as I can in graphite.  I set RULES.

I spend a great deal of time perusing other websites, forums, books and magazines that talk about the rules of art.  There are always discussions about photorealism being art or not.  There are discussions about whether you can call yourself a “watercolorist” if you use an opaque white.  What is “Art” if it’s not an expression of creativity?  Creativity will always use things in a new or different way.  How can you have rules for that?  The April edition of American Artist has an article about artist Penny Soto.  She does wonderful work with watercolor, but also using a wide variety of other mediums including colored pencils and an airbrush.  The title of the piece is “The Only Rule You NEED to Follow,” and contains a quote from Penny that I may have tatooed on my body somewhere, “If I think breaking a ‘rule’ will help a painting, then I just do it.”

Of course, I can’t get a tattoo because my parents are still alive.

  • Spouselessness…

I’m not really spouseless.  She’s always with me.  However, my beautiful, young bride has left me home alone with the babies for the week.  That means that Girl2 and I will be out raising cane and causing a stir.  WooHoo!  We’re a couple of wild ones with no parental supervision for a week.  Today, for instance, I have stayed home from work so.  We’ll start off with some eggs, OJ and milk, then we’re going to clean the house!  Boy I tell ya, good times.  Whew.

Last night we had the annual family viewing of Jesus Christ Superstar.  It’s part of our Easter tradition.  Of course with the bride packing to leave, Girl1 at work, Boy1 off into the world, that just left me and Girl2.  At 3, she doesn’t quite get it.  But she dances when I sing, and she lets me sing start to finish the whole opera.  My favorite scene is the moment of doubt at Gethsemane.  Ted Neely’s emotional prayer with the images of the classical passion paintings rolling through the background actually brings tears to my eyes.

I waited until the movie was over and the baby was asleep before I started cleaning up.  During the cleaning, I came across this present we bought for Mommy, but never gave her.  It was in a small brown paper sack.  As luck would have it, that was the EDM challenge for the evening.  In bed by 1am and up at 5am to get to the airport.  I am typing while Girl2 climbs on me asking about breakfast.  It will be an interesting day.

  • On The Holy Spirit, Yeshua, and Bunnies…

I have spent about two hours studying ancient religions and magikal texts so that I would write this extensive essay on Easter.  The truth of the matter is that I can’t really tie plagues, crucifixions, and fertility rites into a happy tail that ends with Girl2 sitting adorably in the Easter Bunny’s lap.  I just know that everywhere I look there are brightly colored decorations and children running around in chiffon clothing smeared in chocolate.  Whose idea was it to have a holiday that combined children, candy, and expensive clothes.  I guess the plus side is that I get the left over candy.  IF I WEREN’T STILL DIETING!!!*

Last night’s EDM challenge was to draw an apple.  Wouldn’t you know I just ate the last one.  We went to the grocery store yesterday, but we didn’t get any apples.  I had a jar of applesauce I could have drawn.  At 2am, I considered going back to Wal*Mart to draw an apple there.  Of course, it had started raining so I decided not to get out on the bike.  So, once again, I bring you and EDM from a Wet Canvas photo reference.  If you’re not familiar with Wet Canvas, and you’re into art, you really should head over there and see what they have to offer.  It’s a truly great resource.
