  • On Holiday Cards and Bathtime…

First, I must apologize!  The night before last was figure drawing night and I promised you pics.  My beautiful young bride is away for the week and she took the camera!  They will be up by Sunday after she returns.

Last night I had the brilliant idea that instead of staying up until 1am to get my EDM challenge done and uploaded after Girl2 went to bed, I would do the challenge while she took her bath.  So as the tub was filling I ran around the house looking for a holiday card to satisfy EDM 94.  All of them are put away except for my homemade birthday card.  So I grabbed it, my pencil and sketchbook, and plopped the pumpkin into her bubblebath.  She splashed and squealed and had a grand time of it.  I, on the other hand, found that my still life setup was not quite ready for the bathroom floor.  Perhaps if I had taped the card to something so that it wouldn’t keep falling down… Or maybe if I had brought an umbrella…

“Hey Dad!  Check this out!  I’m a killerwhale!”  – Girl2 while shooting up out of the tub to splash back down.

  • Spoon!

In the mid ’90’s there was a comic book and a cartoon called “The Tick.”  It was a great spoof on all of the other action comics out there and I loved it.  We used to Tivo it and watch it every night.  My beautiful young bride watched it so often that random quotes from the show have made their way into Girl2’s vocabulary.  Phrases such as when she would fall down, we would quote, “Gravity is a harsh mistress!

“And, isn’t sanity really just a one-trick pony anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking, but when you’re good and crazy, oooh, oooh, oooh, the sky is the limit.” – The Tickthetick

I may start throwing out quotes from The Tick as they apply to my posts here.  I can’t help myself.  For instance, when I saw last night’s EDM, draw a spoon, my first thought was his battle cry.  The Tick was eating and hold utensils in his hand and trying to come up with a battle cry that will strike terror into the hearts of villains everywhere.  “SPOON!”  Now the wife and I shout that to each other when we really don’t want to go to work but are accepting the challenge again.

Last night was also my second night of figure drawing.  OUTSTANDING!  I was rushed from racing the 67 miles from work to the art house, and it definitely showed in my work.  But the atmosphere and the things I’m learning are truly wonderful.  Pics tomorrow.

  • The Rules of Art?

Last night’s EDM was to draw an egg carton.  This was another of those challenges that I may have to revisit with color.  This particular egg carton was made of the evil styrofoam and had a RAINBOW of colors bouncing off.  But, for this set of challenges I set parameters that require me to do as much as I can in graphite.  I set RULES.

I spend a great deal of time perusing other websites, forums, books and magazines that talk about the rules of art.  There are always discussions about photorealism being art or not.  There are discussions about whether you can call yourself a “watercolorist” if you use an opaque white.  What is “Art” if it’s not an expression of creativity?  Creativity will always use things in a new or different way.  How can you have rules for that?  The April edition of American Artist has an article about artist Penny Soto.  She does wonderful work with watercolor, but also using a wide variety of other mediums including colored pencils and an airbrush.  The title of the piece is “The Only Rule You NEED to Follow,” and contains a quote from Penny that I may have tatooed on my body somewhere, “If I think breaking a ‘rule’ will help a painting, then I just do it.”

Of course, I can’t get a tattoo because my parents are still alive.
