There’s nothing like waking up at 5:30 in the Texas morning to low crawl into a good sketch. Today’s random object was a plastic toy soldier in the classic low crawl position, hugging the dirt like his life depended on it. I threw him up on the light stage and did a quick sketch. Initially I thought he looked like something out of the WWII or Vietnam era, and we used that as a jumping-off point to talk about how military tactics evolved, especially once bullets started flying faster and lower to the ground became the best place to be.

We touched on the history of low crawling, how training drills changed with the introduction of rapid-fire small arms, and how even toys started reflecting those battlefield shifts. I even tossed in a couple stories of my own. Let’s just say there’s a reason you keep your belt buckle low and your profile lower. Whether you’re a soldier or a sketch artist, sometimes staying grounded is the best move.
