Plein Air Watercolor: Veterans Memorial Museum Liberty Tree, Katy, TX

This week, I loaded up on the bike and zipped out to Veterans of Foreign War post 9182 to see the Katy Veterans Memorial Museum. Bob Lee showed me around and gave me a brief interview so I could share it with you. The museum has areas dedicated to each branch of the military and memorabilia from every generation of the American military history. Their prize display is a set of the Medals of Honor offered by the branches that congress has granted them for display purposes.

Then I spent a pleasant hour or so setting up and sketching their liberty tree

There’s a video at the YouTube if you would like to hear the interview and watch the time lapse sketch:

Biker Once More

I bought a motorcycle last October. I told the wife I needed one and she agreed. It’s a 2011 Yamaha Stryker 1300. I will be cruising along wondering why everyone is going so slow before I look down to discover I’m going 90 and couldn’t tell.

I’ve been unemployed (again) for a little over a month. After a morning of filling out applications, sending resumes, I decided to load the art bag on her and take her out for a spin.

30 minutes down the road from me is No Label Brewery. Founded in 2010 they are in an old rice grainery. I thought the grainery would make a nice sketch so that’s what I did.

I did most of it live on Twitch, but it was difficult to get the camera to stay still, especially when the wind picked up. However, I did manage to video most of the process so watch for it on the you tube. I’ll update this later with the link.

Watercolor Pinup 09JUL2020

Watercolor Pinup

This week I decided to turn the cameras on while I watercolored one of my older sketches. The sketch was only 3″x5″. I downloaded it from my facebook site, cropped it, enlarged it, then reduced it to black and white, and printed it. Then I taped a piece of graphite paper to my watercolor block, taped the printed drawing on top of that, and lightly traced it with the blunt end of a paintbrush. When I pulled up the tape, I had a pretty decent copy ready to paint! I taped off the borders and cut loose.

S10E2 Figure Work

Girl2 in her Homecoming gown

First, hug yer babies. They grow up SO fast! One day your brushing paint off their face while they smile up from the table at you. The next you are standing in full assault armor staring down any potential suitor who’s brave enough to approach. Her 4″ heels put her over 6′ that night. She said the boys didn’t dance with her. I told her they weren’t worthy.

What’s on Your Easel?

If you would like to be a part of What’s on Your Easel, simply send an e-mail to Blade@artisticbiker.com with the subject line “Easel” and we’ll use your work to inspire others. That’s what we’re here for.

Our first two easels come from Pamela French. One is a wood cutout with acrylic paint she did for her grand daughter. The second is an artist trading card with watercolor, acrylic, collage, and Ink.

The next Easel comes from ArtistPoetGirl Jamie Lynn The first two are books she made and decorated and the next three are laminated napkins she made

I’ve done very little this week, but I’m happy that I did something. Something is always better than nothing. I did a set of faces, an art journal page, and a couple of pin ups:

The Artistic Biker Live!

For the show this week, I demonstrated the tools I use to get some figure practice in when I don’t have access to live models.

Then I demonstrated that I desperately need more practice with charcoal pencil and figure work. There’s video over at the YouTube.

Bob Deux – Still alive!

Bob Un died after about a week. We boiled crawfish at home this past summer and the first time we did it, we picked the first escapee, put “him” in a tub, and named him Bob. Then he died. The next time we boiled bugs, we did it again. This time, we figured out what they eat and what their environmental needs were. And, I’ll be damned if the bug, Bob Deux, isn’t still alive almost four months later.

Easels

This week, we have an easel sent in from Pamela French WAY back in April. It’s colored pencil of her daughter and a horse
