A black bear landed on the stage this morning. Black bears have been around about five and a half million years, older in their genome than brown or polar bears. They are smaller, faster, and less picky about food. They are one of the success stories from the old megafauna days when mammoths and American lions faded.

Today’s random object is a grasshopper. I had not seen a grasshopper in years until one showed up on my table, bright green and life-sized.

I pulled a helicopter from the Random Object Randomogrifier and laughed at the bent blades. The toy is beat up from living in the canisters, which makes it perfect. The whole point here is to draw what I see, not what I expect to see. When I fight that impulse, the drawing looks more like the real thing and less like a guess.
