I thought I would take a minute and walk you through my processes for the “Random” Object drawings.
- 1 Sketch in the broad shapes just as light as possible
- 2 Begin adding tonal edges
- 3 Begin filling in shadows
- 4 Watch for similar values blending into one another
- 5 Here I add “Shape” shading. The thing is both round and columnar so I lightly shade those shapes
- 6 I pay attention to reflected light AND reflected shadows
- 7 I got carried away with the shadow and made too distinct of a line
- 8 Lightly roll a kneaded eraser over it to lighten and blend it out
- 9 Sharpen my pencil and start working close up on making solid edges and blending them into their value edge
- 10 Contact shadows help distinguish edges of similarly valued shapes
- 11 Remember it is round and add shading to “The Dark Side”
- 12 Fuzzy edges make it look “sketchy” Clean them up with your kneaded eraser rolled into a point for exact work
- 13 The last thing I do is shade the entire image because nothing on the object is “white”
- 14 Ta-Daaaah!
