    It's a concept that has been discussed since the 50s. https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Project_Orion_%28nuclear_propulsion%29

    In the 80s, Pournelle and Niven wrote the SF book "Footfall" which used the idea as a major plotpoint. https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Footfall
